INOC Leads Coordination of Wisconsin’s Statewide Transportation Operation Center Network Relocation

MADISON, Wis., August 13, 2007 – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is using INOC to coordinate the relocation of the Wisconsin’s Statewide Transportation Operation Center’s (STOC) network and server infrastructure when the STOC moves to the Amtrak building in downtown Milwaukee in December 2007. The DOT network is a complex mix of optical and copper technologies including SONET, Ethernet, TDM, and RS-232 and joins multiple dispersed networks built with primarily Cisco, Nortel and Siemens equipment. In addition to project managing the network move, INOC will assist in evaluating the performance of the existing network and with designing and deploying a multi-casting technology that will enable statewide offices to receive traffic video from highway cameras at the same time the STOC receives it. Currently, the STOC processes the traffic video and information before the video feed goes out to other agencies such as State Patrol, regional transportation offices, emergency management, and local television stations. This technical upgrade is expected to significantly improve efficiency and the reporting of traveling conditions, and accelerate emergency response measures.

“The STOC is one of many state transportation facilities whose network is currently being monitored by INOC,” says Sharon Bremser with WisDOT’s Bureau of Highway Operations. “During the past 4 years, INOC has delivered tremendous fiber optic, routing and networking knowledge that has resulted in better response time and mean time to repair for DOTs Intelligent Transportation Systems Wide Area Network (ITSNET). We wanted the same networking diligence applied to the STOC relocation to ensure a seamless transition.”

INOC currently serves as WisDOT’s Network Monitoring and Repair Center (NMRC). The NMRC is responsible for the monitoring and maintenance of Wisconsin’s ITSNET which is comprised of 426 miles of optical fiber lines that stretch from the Minnesota state line to the Illinois state line. As a 24x7 operation, INOC monitors and repairs the network that supports the state’s intelligent transportation system facilities, , safety and weight enforcement, the STOC, , and the road and weather information systems.

“A smooth transition during the STOC relocation is important to maintain critical DOT communications,” says Prasad Rao, chief operating officer for INOC. “As the single point of contact for all ITSNET issues and as project coordinator for the STOC move, INOC will work closely with all applicable offices and vendors to ensure that the relocation of the network and server infrastructure is effectively executed.”
